If it wasn’t because both families were incredibly generous and friendly, this backyard wedding in Virginia would have been such a challenging wedding. I love at-home weddings because there are no rules. However, the site where the tent was to be set up was at the bottom of a sloped area and was really narrow (30’x90′) and quite small, but we had no alternative. Check out the floor plan below. While part of the ground had asphalt, other parts had uneven grass. Trying to place the dance floor was nearly impossible while trying to work around the tent poles. It was definitely one of the more challenging floor plans I had to design, but we made it work. The landscape also limited where we could place the lovely portable toilets! The tent company was less than stellar during installation. Luckily, we had beautiful weather and some very fun guests.
This is why you need a professional planner to help figure out your best layout. The couple and I probably went through 10 options before settling on this one.
The bride’s family, although of Indian descent, were from Jamaica. We had fun with the cuisine, serving an Indian buffet, Carib beer, Jamaican rum cake for dessert, as well as the groom’s favorite cookies from his childhood, and everybody’s favorite cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes. The day began with a very intimate, small ceremony that included only both immediate families, while the rest of the guests were only invited to the reception.

After a spring season full of happy couples getting married, we’re finally resurfacing! What I will remember most about this 2012 spring wedding season is the extreme and unpredictable weather, with lots of rain, a derecho storm knocking out power, and excessive heat. Various parts of three weddings were moved indoors due to rain, and a wedding reception had to be relocated on wedding day entirely. Nonetheless, the couples and theirs guests had fun times.
