Fluffy Thoughts Cakes featured a groom’s cake they made for our Derecho storm clients in their weekly newsletter. I think Lara gave birth to her son that day or the day after but she still delivered this and the wedding cake for us. What a crazy day! A recap on all that very soon. — Vicky
Eat: Maggie Austin Cake
I first heard about Maggie Austin Cake one morning while watching the Today Show’s Wedding. Maggie’s cake was one of the choices for viewers to pick! Lucky for me, Lee Van Buiten of Savoir Faire Wedding Planning Services organized a tasting with Maggie a while back. As some of you may now, I’ve been dancing ballet since I was 4 years old so I was very excited to hear that Maggie used to be a ballerina with the Joffrey Ballet until an injury ended her career. After dancing, she attended pastry school and the rest is history.

White Velvet Cake with Earl Grey Ganache & Lemon Flecked Vanilla Buttercream
Lemon & Spanish Olive Oil Pound Cake with Apricot Preserves & Fiori di Sicilia Buttercream
Vietnamese Cinnamon Cake with Hazelnut Praline & Cappuccion Buttercream
Mocha Spice Cake with Crushed Pecan & Maple Whiskey Buttercream
Double Chocolate Espresso Cake with Seville Orange & La Belle Orange Buttercream
Maggie’s combination of ingredients are so interesting and different from standard wedding cakes. While her cakes start at $10 per slice, they really are a work of art and her attention to detail is extreme. The one below is my favorite. — Vicky
Occasionally Cake, Alexandria, VA
After driving to my dad’s house near Mt. Vernon a few months ago, something caught my eye… CAKE. There was a storefront on Route 1 that I had not seen before: Occasionally Cake. I frantically looked for spot to turn around and was excited about my new find. Turns out they are about to celebrate their 1 year anniversary!
This is a small store with direct view of the kitchen and a few seats to sit and enjoy a cupcake….or two. I met Sabrina Campbell, cake designer and owner, and we chatted a bit about their cakes and cupcakes. Fortunately, I had a surprise 30th birthday party coming up for one of best friends and decided to give her a try. Right then and there we sketched all of the elements of what I wanted and it was spot on and it is all edible.
They have what seems like an encyclopedia of their own original cake flavors (honestly, 6 plus pages) to choose from. I picked up some cupcakes to taste test and they were good. Sabrina’s artistic work is great and that is what really makes the cake spectacular. Her attention to detail was really incredible.
Also take a look at their wedding cakes and you can check out their gallery online.
Happy Cake Hunting!
