Perfect Spring Day Wedding at Bull Run Golf Club in Haymarket Virginia

For our associate coordinator, Jen Briley, this could not have been a better client for her very first wedding as a lead coordinator. Our couple was kind and fun and the day could not have gone better. Our bride had the biggest smile on her face the entire day. Congratulations, Jen! A Starry Night Wedding at Josephine Butler Park Center

Inspiration can come from anywhere. A conversation under a starry night sky provided the style inspiration for our client’s December wedding, using midnight blue and accents of gold and silver providing some sparkle. Spilled Milk Catering did a wonderful job designing an almost all-vegan menu. All photos by Stephen Gosling

This constellation design by Archer and Olive appeared on the couple’s invitations and we used it again to provide our guests with a run down of the evening’s activities. Photo: Stephen Gosling

We wanted affordable floral options that still reminded us of the starry night sky so we actually chose to use baby’s breath and silver brunia. The baby’s breath looked like little stars. Photo: Stephen Gosling

Fun Details from the Derecho Wedding

Last week, I recapped last spring’s derecho wedding. Despite the weather, I really had a great time planning the whole weekend worth of activities with the couple and with their respective families. Here are some more fun details from that weekend. Apologies for my shaky camera work though! Vicky

Rehearsal Dinner: Carmine’s Washington DC. We had featured Carmine’s as an option for rehearsal dinner with large number of guests a while back. Click here to read that post.

carmines washington dc rehearsal dinner

With nearly 70 guests, we had the back dining room at Carmine’s to ourselves. We set up a few long tables, which was perfect for that space. Photo: Vicky Choy

carmines Washignton DC rehearsal dinner

We displayed some fun mementos from the couple’s childhood including the groom’s baby cowboy boots! How cute is that? Photo: Vicky Choy

yellow purple flowers petals edge rehearsal dinner

Working with the mother of the groom who had a great eye for design, Petals Edge provided flowers that fit the casual, Italian restaurant vibe. We used a mossy green burlap runner down the center of the tables. At each place setting was a menu card with a “pop quiz” about fun facts about the couple on the reverse side. Photo: Vicky Choy

For favors, we looked for the couple’s favorite things for inspiration. With M&Ms as the bride’s favorite snack, we set up a giant display of navy blue and green M&Ms after dinner. I got huge paper mache letters and sliced off the top so that they could be filled with the candy. I also wrapped the outside of the letter with coordinating ribbon. This is about as crafty as I get! The couple also loved drink koozies, so we gave those out as well. Tip on order chocolate candy online: be careful when you order them. If the temperature is very hot, you may want to order them with ice packs and have them ship overnight. Also think about whether the candy might sit on your front steps in the sun once delivered.

Welcome Bags – With the groom being from Texas and the bride from Virginia, we wanted to included items that were reflective of that besides the usual essentials. Check out the Texas Lemonade, made with Tito’s Vodka, a small-batch vodka is distilled in Austin, Texas. We included the recipe along with all the ingredients needed to make this easy yet tasty cocktail.

Happy Anniversary A&B! Neither rain nor a Derecho could stop this Wedding!

I cannot believe it’s been one year since the derecho storm that hit the Washington, DC area June 29, 2012. As I was packing the trunk of my car outside Carmine’s in DC after the completion of a wonderful rehearsal dinner, the derecho storm came sweeping down 7th Street NW, drenching me and my arm full of stuff (do you still think us planners lead a glamorous life?) Next day, we found out the reception venue had lost power due to the derecho storm. After hours of phone calls on a day where cell phone service was spotty at best, I was able to locate a venue that could accommodate our guests.

I will forever be indebted to the team at the The Westin Arlington Gateway for hosting 165 weddings guests with no notice. In just a few hours, they made it happen. The entire staff was helpful and flexible and didn’t bat an eye at the curve ball thrown their way (Did I mention they already had a 400+ guest dinner in their other ballroom?). I am also thankful for the an incredible production team that all rolled with the punches.

Check out these beautiful photos from Leah Stearn of Studio Juno (more on her blog) and tell me if you can tell that this was not plan A. Enjoy – Vicky

Not sure if you can see it but the back of this arrangement had a few sprigs of cotton. The bride and groom at the time were teaching in Mississippi and cotton fields could be seen for miles.

Whimsical Wedding for a Beatles loving couple in Arlington (Part 2)

Here is Part 2 of Brian and Kristin’s winter wedding at the Clarendon Ballroom. If you missed Part 1, go back and check it out. — Vicky

The ballroom transformed after the ceremony for the reception. Love the warm lighting and the mix of table shapes. The paper pom-poms also appears as napkin rings! Photo by Kate Hasuchka

Venue & Catering: Clarendon Ballroom. You know I love Sandra Hoehne, Director of Catering, and Chef Patrick. Kristin and Brian said their favorite meal is Thanksgiving dinner. So Sandra and Patrick designed a comfort foods menu that was inspired by a Thanksgiving feast, but made it sophisticated for a wedding.

Floral Design: Devers Design Group. Other than Michael being so fun to work with, one of the reason we chose Devers was that given February weather, we wanted someone who can still deliver the flowers in case of snow. Devers was just down the street from the Clarendon Ballroom.

Lighting: John Farr

Rehearsal Dinner: Lyon Hall. Their 2nd floor private dining space is a fun choice. Read our review here.

Guest Hotel: Westin Arlington Gateway. The Westin is a good choice not only for its location but the hotel has a modern, zen-like esthetic which provides a beautiful backdrop for photos.

Whimsical Wedding for a Beatles loving couple in Arlington (Part 1)

Happy Anniversary to Brian and Kristin. To celebrate their wedding anniversary, let’s have a look back at their wedding. More in Part 2 later this week. — Vicky

Arlington Va wedding Clarendon Ballroom winter

Braving the February weather for a photo outside! Photo by Kate Hauschka.

Colors: We worked primarily with teal, fuchsia, and navy blue, with a pop of white.

Design Concept: Kristin loved paper pom-poms so we had them everywhere. She was also a huge Beatles fan and you will see that reflect in some of the design details. We used vinyl 45 records with Beatles albums as table numbers and some of Kristin’s collectibles as decor. We found a bunch of old records and used them for decor (Freecycle was a treasure trove of giveaway records). The ones we chose were all love songs. Kristin had given Brian a slinky as a gift a long time ago and Brian loves playing with it so that inspired us to give mini Slinkys as favors/escort cards and as a holder for the table numbers. Check out the photos by Kate Hauschka.

Real Wedding: End of Summer at Meridian House (Part 1)

After several rain outs, Brian and Jill got married on Labor Day weekend to a beautifully sunny day. The best part of this wedding was that we had a Rabbi (for Jill), a priest (for Brian) and a minister (Brian’s long time friend) officiating the ceremony

Meridian House wedding

Venue: Meridian International Center “Meridian House” (Jessica Blinn). The Linden Grove, the gardens and the mansion house are all so picturesque that no wonder it is always a top venue for DC weddings.

Catering: R&R Catering (Anne Portell)

Photography: Mark Bettinger for Rodney Bailey Photography. This is the second time we’ve worked with Mark and just love how easy going he is but yet, he still gets excited when he gets a great shot.

Floral Design: Petals Edge Floral Design. Love the arrangement they created with gerbera daisies popping out of a bed of wheat grass. What a cheerful look!

Ceremony & Cocktail Hour Music: Bellini Ensemble (Kathy Birch)

Band: Amaretto (booked through Bialek’s Music). Loved the energy of these guys! The brass section is just awesome. Best of all, after working with several high maintenance bands recently, these guys are generally really nice people and happy to be there, not to mention fantastic musicians.

Cake: Pastries by Randolph.

eaTip: The couple provided transportation from Marriott Wardman Park and Meridian House. Not realizing that there was a separate bus entrance to the hotel, the guests all waited at the main entrance. Luckily, my smart associate Megan was there and corralled everyone to the right location. Lessons learned for those with room blocks at Marriott Wardman Park.

Stay tuned for Part 2 for photos from the day!

— Vicky
